HISTORY

A Vibrant Learning Environment

The adult literacy programme (initially under the JAMAL initiative) has been in existence for over 25 years. We primarily serve the students from the Standpipe to August Town communities, but some students will come from as far as Downtown Kingston to participate in the program.

Many of our students are domestic helpers, gardeners and handymen, vendors and taxi drives.  Most of the students have been a part of the school system and a surprising number of them have graduated from secondary school but are still only semi-literate.  The major reasons that others did not complete school include the cost, teenage pregnancy, being forced to work to support the family and expulsion on account of misbehaviour.  Some students have learning disabilities such as dyslexia and so teachers are constantly challenged to find creative ways to impart the knowledge to their students.

We use a 3-term academic year as in most primary and secondary schools. As a general rule, each term will usually begin and end at the same time as secondary schools.
